After finishing the staff, the monk told his abbot he was going for a walk to test his new staff, and he never returned. An exiled warrior eventually discovered the staff and attached a sharp blade that is every bit as perfect as the staff itself. It has since been adorned with precious metals, but it remains as flawless as ever. Combat Tactics ****************************************************************************** ================= 9.1 Combat Basics ================= Single Opponents ---------------- I've found the basic attack combos (pressing A multiple times) is effective against most enemies. Jump behind the enemy after a combo (B + left thumbstick forward) and you'll likely evade a return attack. Repeat the process. If the enemy starts blocking you can either use a power attack or jump behind it. Attacking from behind will break the shield. If you need to close with a distant enemy the forward roll (B + left thumbstick forward) will close the distance faster. You may want to do this at an angle if the opponent has a ranged attack. If you notice an enemies charging a power attack either dodge it or quickly attack to break its concentration. If an enemies about to use an area attack when your in range, stop an block the effect. Group Combat ------------ Basic attack combos are effective against grounds as well. Consider you're position with respect to all of the opponents. Try to avoid being surrounded. Try to keep the main group between you an the opponent your currently attacking. Use sideway dodges away from the main pack between attacks, switching opponents if another becomes closer. When fighting groups its safer to try to break the shield from behind than to attempt a power attack. Switch to a non blocking opponent if one is in range. Lost Spirits ------------ The are the most annoying of the common enemies. Their attacks drain both health and chi. The also have a homing attack that is guarantied to him, if you see the green projectiles coming at you stop moving and block. ================ 9.2 Style Choice ================ Pick a style capable of injuring the enemies. Spirit are immune to weapons. Demons are immune to magic and support (and the unique spirit thief) so those match ups are to be avoided. If you see the word "immune" after attacking switch styles. If you get a debilitation condition like paralysis or poison in battle, consider switching to a transformation type to cure the condition (does not work against freezing. ======================= 9.3 Followers in Battle ======================= You current follower can take either an attacking role or a support role in combat. By setting them to attack, they act as cannon fodder, distracting some of the enemies while you deal with a smaller group. Don't worry if your follower falls in battle, they will resurrect themselves after the battle's over. In a support roll the follower may provide health, chi or focus restoration or effect some other beneficent effect. See the followers section for details. ============= 9.4 Power Ups ============= Grab the spherical power ups dropped by defeated opponents to restore attributes or provide other beneficial effects. Red spheres restore some health, blue sphere restore some Chi, yellow sphere restore some Focus. White spheres completely restore all three of those attributes. Black spheres make it impossible for enemies to block your attacks for a while. You can guarantee certain power ups will be dropped by starting Harmonic combos with particular styles. =================== 9.5 Harmonic Combos =================== Read the descriptions of the support and magic styles. Those tell you what attack you need to do start the combo some styles require power attacks (X) and others area attacks (A+X), once the timer has started under the targeted opponent switch to a martial style and use a power attack (X) on the opponent before the timer run out. ============== 9.6 Focus Mode ============== To gain an extra advantage of an opponent you can enter focus mode using the Y button. This slows down opponent while your focus bar gradually decreases, allowing you to get in some extra hits. This can be useful against an opponent that heals itself when weakened to finish it off. =============== 9.7 Chi Healing =============== If you take damage, try to use the Chi Healing while you're dodging or jumping into position. This can restore a few extra hit points without interrupting your routine. ============== 9.9 Chi Damage ============== Toggling Chi Damage does extra damage in battle. I feeling Chi is best spent on healing and do not use it. ==================== 9.10 Chi Restoration ==================== Having Dawn Star in support mode recharges you chi allowing for extra healing. There will be occasions where she will not be available either be choice or necessity. ================== 9.11 Gem Selection ================== If you know you're going into a combat situation remove gem that only boost conversation skills in favor of those boosting you primary and secondary attributes. ****************************************************************************** 10. Open Palm Walkthrough ****************************************************************************** I've choose Furious Ming for the Open Palm walkthrough. Other characters may experience some subtle variations. The walkthrough contains the dialog choices necessary for the Dawn Star romance. NOTE: Many of the containers do not have fixed contents. The contents (amount of silver, presence of a gem, type of gem) may change depending on the order a group of containers are opened, how you resolved certain quests. I've had a couple of gems fail to respawn on reload, but those may just be low percentage occurrences. Some of the contains contain random gems of varying grades. ============== 10.1 Chapter 1 ============== --------------- 10.1.1 Tutorial --------------- You begin in the combat ring in the school in Two River in a conversation with Jing Woo.
