This FAQ will include everything you need to know about the game, including a complete moves list, trivia, controls and more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) ABOUT FATAL FURY SNK had been wanting to do a fighting game for a while and in 1989 they started work on one. When it was finally released 2 years later in 1991 it wasn't very well received due to Capcom's spectacular Street Fighter 2 being the most popular arcade game around, which had been released a couple of months before Fatal Fury. That said, Fatal Fury is still a playable game with a fairly interesting story (for a fighting game, anyway). It also has some good ideas like the 2 on 1 mode (which Capcom later stole for their Street Fighter Alpha games), but not being able to play as the other characters is a big downer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) STORY The actual storyline for Fatal Fury has a huge background, incorporating another game series called Art of Fighting (originally, at least) but I'll narrow it down and make it more simple. 10 years a go, Geese Howard killed Jeff Bogard. Jeff and Geese were both supreme masters of the martial arts, and had both trained under Tung Fu Rue. However, whilst Jeff stuck on the good path, Geese was only in it for power. After Tung Fu Rue chose Jeff to be the one to learn some legendary fighting techniques, Geese left and plotted revenge. He got it by removing Jeff forever, right in front of Jeff's 2 sons. Whilst Geese thought that everything was done and he'd never here from the Bogards again, the 2 sons swore revenge. Both Terry and Andy trained for 10 years, mastering unique moves. Andy also met a kick boxer named Joe Higashi who said he would help them avenge their father's death. Geese Howard once again held another "King of Fighters tournament" in South Town. It was the perfect time to get revenge on Geese for the Bogards, and along with Joe, they enter it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) CONTROLS The controls for Fatal Fury 2 are incredibly simple and only require 3 of the 4 buttons on a Neo Geo arcade machine. The joystick controls layout are as if your character is facing right, reverse them when facing left. BUTTON CONTROLS A: Punch B: Kick C: Throw JOYSTICK CONTROLS Up: Jump upward Up right: Jump toward opponent Right: Move toward the opponent. Down: Crouch Down left: Crouching block Left: Move backward/block Up left: Jump away from the opponent. LEGEND QCF: Quarter circle forward QCB: Quarter circle back Charge: (Hold direction for 2 seconds) U: Up UF: Up forward F: Forward D: Down DB: Down back B: Back UB: Up back ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) BASIC MOVES Punching Press A to do a punch attack. Kicking Press B to do a kick attack. Throwing Press C when next to the opponent to grab and throw the opponent. Throws are incredibly useful as they do a lot of damage, so use them as often as possible. Special moves Terry, Andy and Joe have 4 special moves each and you'll have to learn them all as they are more important than being able to punch or kick. (See section 7) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) GAME PLAY The aim of Fatal Fury is simple enough. You pick from one of 3 fighters, then take on CPU controlled opponents in the one player mode. You have to beat all of them to complete the game and see the ending sequence for your character. In fights, knocking the opponent out in two rounds will win you the fight. Use special moves, punches, kicks and throws to win. Fatal Fury's main feature is the plains system. Most of the stages have 2 plains which the opponent characters will jump around. Sometimes when you attack the opponent they will be knocked into another plain. If the opponent is in the above plain press up to move to them. If the opponent is in the down plain and you are in the up plain, press down to move to them. If you and the opponent are in different plains, press A or B to do a plain attack and leap from one plain to another doing an attack. The following stages only have 1 plain: Michael Max's Hwa Jai's Billy Kane's ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) SPECIAL MOVES Here is how to do each character's special moves and what they are. If you do not understand the command, look at the controls section. Also, moves are listed as if a character is facing right. Reverse the command if facing left. TERRY BOGARD "OK!" Power wave: QCF+A Terry's main projectile attack is a yellow wave which moves across the ground. After a short distance the wave will fizzle out. A fairly good attack but do not use it constantly as it can easily be jumped over, meaning the opponent can quickly do a counter attack. Burn knuckle: QCB+A This is Terry's best attack. Putting power into one of his fists, Terry will charge across the screen. If he hits the opponent they'll be knocked over. This move is also incredibly quick so use it often. Crack shot: DB, UF+B An overhead kick type attack which is slightly hard to do, but is another very fast move. Rising tackle: D (Charge) U+A Another great move. Terry will flip upward and hit the opponent with his legs. If the opponent ever jumps at you, use it. This move also does a good amount of damage. ANDY BOGARD "YEEEAH!" Hishoken: QCF+A A large blue projectile which travels through the air. It will faze out like Terry's power wave when it travels a distance of about 3 quarters of the screen. Zaneiken: DB, F+A Andy's best move, constantly use it when playing against the CPU. Dashing across the screen, Andy will strike the opponent with an elbow. Shoryudan: D (Charge) U+A Spinning his arms, Andy does a flying uppercut which is very much like a dragon punch. Use when the opponent jumps at you. Kuhadan: DB, UF+B This attack can seem hard to at first, but is a good attack to learn. Andy will leap through the air in an arc motion, and can hit the opponent. Very useful for air superiority. JOE HIGASHI "Yo Sha!" Hurricane upper: QCF+A Joe's projectile is a hurricane which travels across the ground and will go about 3 quarters of the screen before fazing out. TNT punch: Press A rapidly Joe will do lost of very quick punches to hit the opponent. This move is only useful at close range, don't do it if the opponent is far away from you as it will not hit. Slash kick: QCB+B This has to be Joe's best move. Think of Terry's burn knuckle special move but using a foot instead of a fist and that's pretty much it. Joe will charge across the screen with a foot full of power. If he hits the opponent they'll be knocked over. This move is also incredibly quick so use it often. Tiger kick: QB, UF+B Surrounded by the image of a tiger, Joe will dash forward, and if he hits the opponent he will damage them. This move is slightly harder to do than the others and I always thought the slash kick was better anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) GAME MODES SINGLE PLAYER MODE Choose either Terry, Andy or Joe, then enter the King of Fighters tournament. Battle CPU controlled opponent fighters and compete in bonus games. A second player can help you in all the fights apart from the final fight against Geese (see below). 2 VS. 1 MODE When a second player joins in, a message will appear on screen. Player 2 can now select a fighter, and you'll then both get to fight the opponent player 1 was fighting (who is still CPU controlled) together! This mode is obviously a lot of fun. If you are on a stage which has 2 plains, player 1 will be in the lower plain and player 2 will be on the higher plain. Strangely, you can hurt each other if you want to! Once you beat/lose to the opponent, you will fight each other. VS. MODE 2 players can fight each other. You can pick Terry, Andy or Joe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) ONE PLAYER MODE OPPONENT GUIDE DUCK KING His main attack is the cannon ball. Whenever he does this attack, he will land in a different plain, so keep that in mind as you can often hit him just before he lands by using a plain attack. He also tends to use his jump kick a lot, so be on the look out for that when he jumps. Finally, Duck likes to use his crouching slide kick move frequently, so be ready to block low if he gets close to you. RICHARD MEYER This guy is very annoying most of the time. His main methods are to jump around, or grab onto the bars on his stage and then stay still, kicking outward. Use attacks like the burn knuckle, slash kick and kuhadan a lot to beat him. Richard also tends to change plains a lot more than the other characters, but don't use the plain attacks that frequently -he can usually counter attack you easily. MICHAEL MAX He seems to use his "Tornado upper" attack a lot. This attack looks exactly like Joe's hurricane upper and works in exactly the same way. Michael also has the ability to quickly dash backwards, by wary of this as he can dodge some moves like the burn knuckle very easily. TUNG FU RUE At first he may seem like a weak old man who doesn't have any intentions on attacking you, but once you've knocked enough health of him he'll turn into a powerful monster who has a flying spinning clothesline (duck to avoid it) and a spinning kick attack. When he does this attack, two orange projectiles (which look like Andy's hishokens) are also throw in different directions. After you knock more health of him he'll turn back into the old man. The normal smaller version of him has one attack: a very short wave shock blast projectile. HAW JAI This fighter is a kick boxer like Joe, but is probably the easiest opponent of the lot. At first he won't do much, but after you knock enough health off him he'll be thrown a bottle of some kind of super drink (or beer) which makes him stronger (and redder). When he does this he is slightly stronger, and will use an attack which looks like Joe's tiger kick move, only he seems to shout "Rocket!" when he does it. RAIDEN A huge wrestler. He likes to jump around a lot, but his main attack is a spit attack which has a short range. It does stay on screen for a while though so time it right when you plan to strike him back. BILLY KANE Billy is the only fighter to use a weapon. His cane can be used to strike out at you which has a good range. He also uses an attack where he sticks his cane in the ground and jump kicks forward. To beat him, simply throw him. When you do do a throw on Billy, he will drop his cane. Now stand right next to him as when Billy gets up, he won't move and will wait for a new cane (someone will throw him one in the background) as this happens, get ready. As Billy lands from catching the new cane, throw him again. Keep doing this process to beat him fairly easily. GEESE HOWARD The final opponent is Geese himself. Geese is very fast and will constantly use his "Repuken" projectile attack (looks like Terry's power wave, only blue, faster and more damaging) on you. Like Michael Max, he also has the ability to dash backwards quickly to avoid attacks. Geese also likes to do an attack which is a spinning kick a lot. Finally, he also has the ability to counter moves thrown at him, when he does this he will grab and throw you. To beat him, simply avoid his repukens and get attacks in whenever you can. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) BONUS GAMES After every 2 fights against the CPU, you'll get to do a bonus game. In bonus games, the aim is ti simply rapidly press the A button to win in a virtual arm wrestling game. The machine you play against has the head of a wrestler on it which reacts to how well/badly you are doing. To win the game, beat the wrestler by moving your arm to your side. You lose if the opponent does this. If you do win the game, you'll receive a whole heap of completely useless bonus points. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) TRIVIA *Fatal Fury's original title was Real Bout. You can see this in many of the stages, as things like billboards or shops have the name "Real Bout on them. *The game was also originally due for a release in 1990 but the development was delayed, and Fatal Fury was released a year after it originally should have been. *Many people commented on how fast Geese can throw Repukens, almost as if he can throw two at once. SNK actually liked this idea and in the game "Fatal Fury Special" they gave him an attack called the "Double repuken" which was 2 repukens put together. *When Fatal Fury was released, there were many rumours on how to play as the CPU characters. Methods included button codes at the bonus game screen, beating the entire game without using special moves etc. None of the codes worked of course. *In Michael Max's stage, if you look closely you can see the ferris wheel which you can see in Raiden's stage. *The people in Raiden's stage are also drawn extremely small. They should be larger if you look at how big the fighters are. *On Duck King's stage you can see Richard Meyer laughing in the background. *A lot of people have also argued about what the correct way of spelling Richard's surname. At the Vs. screen, it's Meyer, but on his life bar it's "Myer". Most people tend to go with "Meyer" (I do). *Geese is the only character to have a taunt (which he will do occasionally). *In Japan this game is known as "Garou Densetsu Shukumei No Tatakai" which means "Legend of Hungry Wolf: Battle of Destiny". *If you complete the game without using any credits, you'll see an extended ending sequence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) FAQ Can you play as anyone other than Terry, Andy or Joe? No. Back in the day when Fatal Fury was first released various methods were bought up but none of them worked. Does Geese Howard really die in this game? No. He's in Fatal Fury Special, but that game does not count towards the story line. However, he's in Fatal Fury 3 and that games does count towards the story line, so go and play that. (Fatal Fury 3 is where the series starts to get really good). Is there anyway to fight Geese in the 2 on 1 mode? No. I've tried it but it won't let me. Which other consoles did Fatal Fury appear on? Neo Geo AES, Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES and Neo Geo CD all got a version of Fatal Fury. Neo Geo AES is arcade perfect and Neo Geo CD is practically arcade perfect. The Mega Drive/Genesis version is the next best one, but Billy Kane and Hwa Jai are missing. However, in that verison you can play as ALL of the characters. The SNES version is pretty bad, and whilst it has all the characters it's much more difficult to use them for yourself than the SEGA version, plus the plain system is gone and the controls are unresponsive. What other Fatal Fury games are there? In list format: Fatal Fury 2 Fatal Fury Special Fatal Fury 3 Real Bout Fatal Fury Real Bout Fatal Fury Special Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 Garou Mark of the Wolves A lot of Fatal Fury characters have appeared in other games, such as Art of Fighting 2, the King of Fighters series, Capcom Vs. SNK series etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) DISCLAIMER Only GameFAQs and Neoseeker can use this FAQ.
