Simply replace [gnat] with "@" when responding. I chose [gnat] because it rhymes with "at" and is easy to remember. Same goes for "." - [snot].) This guide may only be distributed and/or posted in its original format. If you wish to post or use excerpts from this guide, PLEASE ask for my permission before doing so (especially if you work for a magazine or website). A lot of time and effort was spent putting this thing together and that should be taken into consideration. And remember..... "Respect is everything." Besides, contacting me will also give me an opportunity to hook up and talk shop with fellow San Andreas "thuggers"..... ***************************************************************************** "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" is copyright 2004-2005 by Rockstar Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. Since Version 3.0 I have gotten a lot of mail concerning this game and it took me awhile to sort it all out and try these new suggestions. I also had to go through all of the new games I got for Christmas 2005 (six in all). One of those games was "Stubbs the Zombie" (Xbox) and I did the guide for that before I started doing revisions to all of my other work. One of the biggest things for me lately is that I have upgraded my computer. I now am the proud owner of a 1.5Ghz Single Core Intel Mac Mini. I also acquired Textwrangler 2.1.2 from BareBones (the same company that made BBEdit Lite). The nice thing about Textwrangler is that it has a really nice spellcheck feature which was something that BBEdit Lite didn't have. Really helpful in cleaning out the document of spelling errors. This is the first revision done on the new setup. Prior to doing any writing I was trying to get a topic concerning the differences between the Original and Second Edition versions stickied at the GameFAQs message boards. After they were rejected I decided to make it into its own separate FAQ. After it was rejected twice I decided to use what I did for that in this update. I also got some email from a couple of readers concerning a possible glitch before or during "King in Exile" (Cesar Vialpando). CJ would die for no reason after the cutscene and would keep dying over and over at the local hospital. I asked around and got no straight answers. Maybe somebody can shed some light into this. As usual I incorporated new ideas, did some format changes, and rewrote certain areas of the document. 0---------------------------------------------------------------------------0 0====================0 | Additional Sources | 0====================0 --"Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" Local Business Advertiser's Guide (Game Manual) --GameFAQs San Andreas Message Board --The Chadness ("Reuniting The Families" Exploit) --TheLegendaryOne (Chiliad Challenge Exploit) --Malcrasternus (Thermal Goggles Hint) --Vehicle Location Map by GamerLady 0==========================0 | Additional Contributions | 0==========================0 --Glen Winstein --Angela --glenJammin --Steven Eng --Allan Curtis (aka "evilrage") --David Sears --Andy Kim --Andrew Petrie --Jason Vercellone --Phil Carter --Anders Paulson --Craig Kostelecky --Odhita Kamayana --Mxyzptlk --Andrew Mogridge --Randy Russell --CNDW (aka "Evil Bastardo") --Dr. Simon Chan --Monkey Man --rav0 --Nick Markovich --Duke --Vaibhav Naruka --Tom Fang --powerslaves --Joshua Frech --SkippPOP (Skipp Kennedy) --Carl Johnson --rav0 --Stefan Cvetkovic --Apearsall20 --Anurag Sinha --Philip Carstens --Sean McCafferty --Slim --Jay Versluis --quest78 0================================0 | Other Documents I Have Written | 0================================0 X=======================================================================X | "Grand Theft Auto 3" Walkthrough (Strategy Guide) | |=======================================================================| | "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" Walkthrough (Strategy Guide) | |=======================================================================| | Differences Between The Three Versions Of "Grand Theft Auto: Vice | | City" for PlayStation 2 (FAQ) | |=======================================================================| | "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" Suggested Music List FAQ (Xbox and PC) | | (currently hosted by IGN.com) | |=======================================================================| | "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" Hidden Text FAQ | |=======================================================================| | "Stubbs the Zombie" (Xbox) Walkthrough (Strategy Guide) | |=======================================================================| | "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay" Walkthrough | | (Strategy Guide) | | | | One of the earlier versions of my TCoR: EFBB guide can be found in | | the book "GameFAQs Presents.....The Ultimate Xbox Strategy Guide" | | published by Future Network USA. | X=======================================================================X ***************************************************************************** /==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====X##***##X====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX== 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====X##***##X====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 | Table of Contents | 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 ==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====X##***##X====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==/ /XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 0=========================================0 | A. Who Am I? | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ My name is Robert Allen Rusk and I am a 39-year old hardcore gamer with about 30 years of gaming experience. I am an ex-gametester (Broderbund Software, LucasArts Games, Point Of View Computing) and an ex-arcade attendant (Namco Cyberstation - Pier 39, San Francisco, CA). I also own multiple systems such as the Sega Dreamcast, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar, PlayStation 1, Xbox, and, of course, the PlayStation 2. I currently work at JCPenneys at one of the malls here in San Antonio, TX. Retail isn't the best job in the world but JCPenneys is a very stable company unlike some of the other places I have worked for in the past like internet service providers or web programming companies. I started writing guides in 2003 because I felt it was something I could do utilizing my writing skills gained in college and gametesting along with my passion for vidgames. Over time I have honed my overall writing and organization skills plus my creative thinking skills. I have extended the play value of the games I have written guides and FAQs for many times over plus I have received many letters from all over the world. I am also what one may call and RGB enthusiast. I hack my game consoles to try to get the best possible video from them and that usually involves tapping into the RGB Analog video signals and using them on the right monitors to achieve my desires. To this end I became a member of the GamesX.com mod forum and I post regularly on their "RGB + Video Discussions" forum area. In addition, I am a member of the X-Otic Computer Systems of San Antonio (www.xcssa.org), a group who specializes in Linux, Mac, and other systems. I am also a regular forum poster at GameFAQs, an occasional poster at www.Atariage.com, and I am also a member of the MOFAT (a members only message board set up by GTA: Vice City players who met on the Vice City message boards at GameFAQs). Outside of gaming, my interests include Godzilla (I have been a G-Fan since the age of ten) and Red Dwarf (I am currently awaiting the release of Series VII and Series VIII on DVD here in the States). As far as favorite sports teams go my teams are the San Antonio Spurs (NBA) [the local team], the Denver Broncos (NFL) [although I live in Texas I am originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado], and the Air Force Falcons (NCAA Football). /========================================================================= 0===========================================================================0 | A.2. My Setup | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ This guide was constructed using BBEdit Lite 6.1 and a Power Mac Workgroup Server 8550/200 (with a G3 card running at 330 MHz). It is now being maintained using TextWrangler 2.1.2 on a 1.5Ghz Single Core Intel Mac Mini. I view my work in Safari to help in seeing how it would look on the web and correct format errors. I also play GTA3 on my NEC MultiSync 3D RGB monitor using a homebrew RGB box that contains a EL1883 (MacroVision compatible) sync separation chip to acquire video sync, for RGB use, from Composite Video. When I do my writing and guide revisions I run my Mac (on a Compaq monitor) alongside the Xbox or PS2 (on my MultiSync 3D monitor). This way I can simultaneously play and make changes to the guide at the same time. The sound is hooked up to an old stereo box I got from Radio Shack when I acquired my first Amiga 500 in 1990 and it has served me well considering its age. At the time of this revision I have 21 memory cards for my PlayStation 2. I have reorganized the game saves on my memory cards and I now have fifteen black memory cards specifically dedicated to GTA3, Vice City (Original Version (1.40)) and San Andreas. One of those is dedicated to the Second Edition of San Andreas. I also have four memory cards for the Xbox which I used to archive my game saves for San Andreas. These memory cards allow me to quickly go and try out new ideas (and modify old ones) when they occur to me or suggested by others. I have done 100% Completion once on the PS2 (Original Version), Xbox (Original Versions), PS2 (Second Edition Version), and Xbox (Second Edition Version). /========================================================================= 0===========================================================================0 | A.3. From The Author | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ Welcome to my "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" guide! If this is the first time you have visited, you will find a lot of useful information in a highly organized format that you can use to beat all of the missions here in San Andreas. Quotes taken from readers' e-mail are presented "as is" and may include spelling and grammatical errors. When I first posted my initial version of my Vice City guide in 2003, my first one, I did not know how well it would go over and how many people would respond. I wasn't exactly swamped with e-mail but I do get letters from time to time. Sometimes people would ask for advice and others would say how cool the guide is. All it takes is for one person to say how good and useful your guide is to make it all worthwhile. And others have made suggestions that have been incorporated into my guides. I want to thank GameFAQs for creating a place where such documents can be hosted for the benefit of all gamers. I also want to thank IGN.com, NeoSeeker.com, TheVGNation.com, GameHelper.com, and many other sites for their generosity in hosting my other work on their sites. I also want to thank everybody who has taken the time to download and read this guide. I love this game and I wanted to share my creative ideas with fellow San Andreas "thuggers". And, of course, I want to give a special thanks to all those who have taken the time to write to me and tell me what you thought, make suggestions, and ask questions. With that said, let's get down to business shall we?..... /========================================================================= 0===========================================================================0 | A.4. About The Guide | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ The main emphasis of this guide is to provide creative and simple solutions to many of the missions of "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". I have worked hard to make sure that this guide is as complete as possible but at the same time leave room for exploration. I hope that you enjoy this guide as much as learn from it. This guide is designed to help you achieve 100% Completion within San Andreas. Stuff that doesn't directly contribute to it won't be covered in the guide (the exception being the Burglary Mission). This is mainly to keep things manageable. Stuff that won't be covered are Girlfriends (although Gifts are listed in the Weapons and Other Item sections), basketball playing, and(surprisingly enough) Unique Stunt Jumps. Because of the large size of San Andreas each major section of the guide (Section B, Section C, and Section D) will have their own Weapon and Safehouse lists. Another emphasis of this guide is ORDER. If you do the missions and tasks in a certain order, the game will be easier and more fun for you. You don't absolutely have to do them in the EXACT order I have them listed but as you read the guide you will see how it benefitted me. There are a total of 250 objects that must be painted over (Los Santos Graffiti Tags), photographed (San Fierro Photo-Ops), or collected (Las Venturas Horseshoes, Oysters). The collection lists are organized to facilitate item chaining where one item serves as a landmark to the next item. Some of the objects use a landmark system where you start at a particular building inside or just outside a given neighborhood and follow the instructions to the item you are seeking. Once the lists were organized and rewritten I renumbered them from 1 to 50 (or 100) going from the top to the bottom of each list. Each Graffiti Tag, Oyster, Photo-Op, and Horseshoe has a letter designation to make them easier to identify in this guide. In addition there is a three letter Neighborhood Prefix (listings below) indicating a particular neighborhood or area where the item can be found (in these examples I use "XXX"): Graffiti Tags (Los Santos) will be identified with an "T". Examples: Graffiti Tag XXX-T21. Tag XXX-T32. XXX-T65. Oysters (San Andreas) will be identified with an "Y". Examples: Oyster XXX-Y34. XXX-Y16. Photo-Ops (San Fierro) will be identified with a "P". Examples: Photo-Op XXX-P27. XXX-P48. Horseshoes (Las Venturas) will be identified with a "H". Examples: Horseshoe XXX-H18. XXX-H37. 0=======================0 | Neighborhood Prefixes | 0=======================0 LST - Los Santos SMB - Santa Maria Beach RDO - Rodeo VWD - Vinewood TMP - Temple MRN - Marina MKT - Market VBH - Verona Beach VBF - Verdant Bluffs CMR - Commerce DLS - Downtown Los Santos MIN - Mulholland Intersection GPK - Glen Park JFS - Jefferson LCA - Las Colinas ELS - East Los Santos LFS - Los Flores EBH - East Beach PDS - Playa Del Seville ODK - Ocean Docks WFD - Willowfield LIA - Los Santos International Airport ELC - El Corona LMX - Little Mexico IDW - Idlewood GTN - Ganton RDC - Red County FLC - Flint County WST - Whetstone SNF - San Fierro GBR - Gant Bridge SFB - San Fierro Bay EPN - Esplanade North FNC - Financial CLH - Calton Heights JNH - Juniper Hollow DTN - Downtown GVB - Garver Bridge PLS - Palisades JPH - Juniper Hill CHT - Chinatown CHL - City Hall QNS - Queens KNG - Kings ESB - Easter Basin OFL - Ocean Flats HSB - Hashbury GRC - Garcia DHR - Doherty CRS - Cranberry Station AVC - Avispa Country Club EBA - Easter Bay Airport MHL - Missionary Hill FSV - Foster Valley TIR - Tierra Robada SMR - Sherman Reservoir BNT - Bone County LVN - Las Venturas YBG - Yellow Bell Golf Course PRP - Prickle Pine KAC - K.A.C.C. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ What can I say? Rockstar has done it again. They have completely blown my expectations out of the water with San Andreas. San Andreas is much, much larger than GTA3 and Vice City combined with many more things to do whether you want to get 100% Completion or not. There are even more vehicles to play with including earthmovers, tractors, biplanes, jets, street sweepers, and even trains. The one major criticism I have for this game is that they seem to have given us too much of a good thing. Of course, there are a lot of companies that would love to have that kind of criticism. /========================================================================= 0===========================================================================0 | A.7. Controls | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ Although the manual covers the setup pretty good, I felt that I should include a section on controls for those who have gotten used copies of San Andreas that have no manuals. Below are the controls for the PS2 and Xbox versions. 0=========0 | On Foot | 0=========0 PlayStation 2 Version ********************* Move Around...............................................Left Analog Stick [1] Look Around..........................................Right Analog Stick [2] Run............................................................X Button [3] Jump/Climb/Block..........................................Square Button [4] Attack/Fire Weapon........................................Circle Button Enter Vehicle...............................................Triangle Button [5] Center Camera/View Stats/Fire Weapon/Buy Property.............L1 Button Previous Weapon...................................................L2 Button Next Weapon.......................................................R2 Button Crouch............................................................L3 Button [6] Target........................................................R1 Button Look Behind.......................................................R3 Button [7] Gang Active Mode.....................................Directional Pad Up [8] Gang Passive Mode..................................Directional Pad Down [9] Positive Response.................................Directional Pad Right [10] Negative Response.................................Directional Pad Left Pause..........................................................Start Button Change Camera Mode............................................Select Button Xbox Version ************ Move Around...............................................Left Analog Stick [1] Look Around..........................................Right Analog Stick [2] Run............................................................A Button [3] Jump/Climb/Block...............................................X Button [4] Attack/Fire Weapon........................................Right Trigger Enter Vehicle......................................................Y Button [5] Center Camera/View Stats/Fire Weapon/Buy Property..........Left Trigger Previous Weapon................................................White Button Next Weapon....................................................Black Button Crouch.............................................Left Analog Stick Button [6] Target....................................................Right Trigger Look Behind.......................................Right Analog Stick Button [7] Gang Active Mode.....................................Directional Pad Up [8] Gang Passive Mode..................................Directional Pad Down [9] Positive Response.................................Directional Pad Right [10] Negative Response.................................Directional Pad Left Pause..........................................................Start Button Change Camera Mode..............................................Back Button 0-----------------------------------------------------------------------0 [1] - There is no First Person Look Around this time. When fighting hand-to-hand you press the button to block their physical attacks. [4] - When holding a melee weapon (like a bat) or using your fist, the Attack Button is used to swing at your target. When using Grenades or Tear Gas, the same button is used to throw your weapon at the target. The longer you hold, the farther you throw. When holding a gun (like a Silenced Pistol) or a heavy weapon (like a Rocket Launcher), you use the Attack Button to shoot. Use the Target Button in conjunction to aim at your enemy. When used with a Camera, the Attack Button is used to take pictures. [5] - When outside of a vehicle you can see how your Stats are shaping up. When targeting with a weapon this also becomes a handy fire button depending on your particular comfort level. This button is also used to buy property when you approach a Property Icon. [6] - You can improve your ability to target and move at the same time by upgrading Weapon Skills. [7] - This is used in conjunction with the Target Button to recruit gang members. [8] - This is used to keep your gang from following you. It can also be used to disband your group. [9] - When talking to people you use this to give a positive response to their queries. When in certain vehicles, like the Firetruck, you use this to aim the turret. You also use this to control the camera when in Cinematic Camera Mode. [2] - You use this in conjunction with the Look Left and Look Right Buttons to attack from either side of the car. On a motorcycle you can press this button by itself to fire forward. When not doing a Drive-By this will also activate the Nitros on any Nitros installed vehicle. [3] - When using the User Track Station (custom soundtrack feature) you use the following commands to control your music: Hold Directional Pad Left to go to previous track. Hold Directional Pad Right to go to next track. Hold Directional Pad Up to change to previous user soundtrack. Hold Directional Pad Down to change to next user soundtrack. [4] - According to Allan Curtis, when you fail a mission and start it again you may get the Trip Skip icon. When you press it you will automatically go to the mission location instead of having to drive to it again. However, this only occurs on certain missions like "Badlands" (C.R.A.S.H.) where you have to drive a considerable distance to get to your destination. [5] - On the Monster trucks this activates the 4-Wheel Steering. This will allow you to turn the truck on a dime. 0-----------------------------------------------------------------------0 0================0 | In Helicopters | 0================0 PlayStation 2 Version ********************* Pitch/Roll................................................Left Analog Stick Rudder Left.......................................................L2 Button Rudder Right......................................................R2 Button Control Camera/Turret....................................Right Analog Stick Ascend.............................................................X Button Descend.......................................................Square Button Hover.............................................................L3 Button [1] Machine Gun...................................................L1 Button [2] Rockets...................................................Circle Button Pause..........................................................Start Button Change Camera Mode..............................................Back Button Xbox Version ************ Pitch/Roll................................................Left Analog Stick Rudder Left....................................................White Button Rudder Right...................................................Black Button Control Camera/Turret....................................Right Analog Stick Ascend........................................................Right Trigger Descend........................................................Left Trigger Hover..............................................Left Analog Stick Button [1] Machine Gun....................................................B Button [2] Rockets........................................................A Button Pause..........................................................Start Button Change Camera Mode..............................................Back Button [1] - This is used by the Sea Sparrow and Hunter helicopters. You can even shoot down low flying helicopters. [2] - Just like on the Monster trucks, this feature, when used, will allow you to turn the Rhino on a dime. 0-----------------------------------------------------------------------0 It should be noted that due to the difficulty of flying and doing drive-bys with the standard Xbox controller it is HIGHLY recommended that you use either a third party controller that has extra White and Black shoulder buttons or a PS2-to-Xbox controller adapter (which will map the White and Black buttons to L1 and R1 respectively). I used a PS2-to-Xbox controller adapter while playing through the Xbox version. /========================================================================= 0===========================================================================0 | A.8. PS2 and Xbox Differences | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ Now that the Xbox version is released, what are some of the differences between that and the PS2 version? Which one is better (from a technical standpoint)? Here's the breakdown: 0==========0 | Graphics | 0==========0 The graphics on the Xbox version aren't that radically better than the PS2 version but animates more smoothly than on the Xbox version of Vice City. This is probably due to the new engine for San Andreas. In addition the Xbox version has greater draw distance and is much brighter than the PS2 version. Oh, and let's not forget Progressive Scan for the Xbox version. Advantage: Xbox 0=======0 | Sound | 0=======0 The sound quality is about the same between the PS2 and Xbox versions of San Andreas. The Xbox version gets a slight edge due to its custom soundtrack feature. Advantage: Xbox 0==========0 | Controls | 0==========0 This is where the Xbox version is clearly inferior to the PS2 version. The use of the White and Black buttons for flying and drive-bys makes some missions more difficult than on its PS2 counterpart. Rockstar had to make do with what was given to them but the ambitiousness of San Andreas had to have made it difficult for them to come up with a proper control scheme. When one has to recommend a third party controller or a controller adapter to properly play San Andreas, you know things aren't quite right. Advantage: PlayStation 2 0=======================0 | Console Hardware Data | 0=======================0 PlayStation 2 ************* The PS2 version runs fairly well though it tends to chug in a few spots on the map (an intersection in Ocean Docks is one example). Sudden pop-ins are a bit of a problem especially when flying fast aircraft (like smacking into a tree you can't see because it has not loaded yet). Texture loading is pretty smooth but not as fast when using aircraft (within cities). Xbox **** The Xbox version also runs fairly smooth though it tends to chug when you fly through clouds. There aren't as much sudden pop-ins but texture loading is slower (you can outrun the texture loading (in a city) when using a fast motorcycle). It is unclear whether the Thompson drives (which did not like my GTA3 and Vice City games thus forcing me to trade in my initial Xbox) would properly load up San Andreas. Based on preliminary reports San Andreas seems to play pretty smooth in 720p on the newly released Xbox 360. I hope to have more info in future updates. It is unknown if the PS2 version of San Andreas will run better on the soon to be released PlayStation 3 (although I hope it will run in Progressive Scan mode). 0==========================0 | Xbox Version Differences | 0==========================0 >>Shady Industries in San Fierro is now called Solarin Industries. >>The secret Pay N' Spray east of The Strip in Las Venturas (found in the Original PS2 version) has been deactivated. It should be noted that it was also removed in the PS2 Second Edition version. /========================================================================= 0===========================================================================0 | A.9. "Hot Coffee" | 0===========================================================================0 =========================================================================/ Shortly after the PC version was released Rockstar was caught up in a controversy known as "Hot Coffee". Buried within the large mountain of computer code was a little mini-game that allowed the main character to actively please a woman sexually. This was supposed to happen when you got far enough in the relationship of a Girlfriend to have sex with her. The reason for the name "Hot Coffee" is because when she invited you into her house it was for "coffee". During development Rockstar felt that maybe that this mini-game might cause too much trouble so they decided not to use it. However, instead of removing the code, they decided to deactivate it but leave the code within the game. Instead, when you go in for "coffee", you just see the outside of the house and hear a lot of erotic noises. When the PC version came out the mod community went to work to modify San An
